Hong Kong hosts First Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament
For the first time the city hosts the IIHF sanctioned women’s event
Hong Kong Women’s National Team is preparing for challenges ahead

2014 Women’s Challenge Cup of Asia (CCOA) Division I is to be held from December 26th to 28th at Megabox, Kowloon Bay. Four teams from Asia will be competing for the trophy during the three-day event, including Singapore, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong. The event is sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and organized by the Hong Kong Ice Hockey Association (HKIHA).

During the past few years, ice hockey has grown rapidly in the Asian region with a large number of youngsters participating in various hockey activities. Recognizing the potential of the sport in Asia, IIHF has inaugurated the Women’s CCOA Div I to raise ice hockey standard in the region. Hong Kong is chosen to be the first city hosting the tournament assuring the success of hockey development in Hong Kong.

“We are very proud to host the Women’s Challenge Cup of Asia Div I, the event is Hong Kong’s largest women’s event during the calendar year.” Said Ms. Yip Siu Yin, the Chairlady of HKIHA.

Hong Kong Women’s National Team has undergone weeks of intensive training in preparation for the tournament. Japanese coach Hiroki Wakabayashi and former Chinese National Team player Tan Anqi are the head coach and assistant coach of the team. Their international experience and tactics can help the national team to compete against other teams in the Asia.

“Players on the team are very positive and receptive to our guidance, this is utmost important on our team performance.” Said Head Coach Wakabayashi, “We now have to put the players in different line formation and tactics with the limited practice time.”

The Women’s National Team underwent its first on-ice training session, which covered various tactics including counterattack and shorthanded defense. Team members Adrienne Li was happy with the team performance after the first practice. “National Team practice is different from what we used to do during regular league games, the first session has already provided me a lot of insights into the game,” said Li. “Players are expected to win when they get on ice, this tournament is no exception. Hopefully we can win the Challenge Cup by leveraging our home-ice advantage.”

2013/14 is a very important milestone for Hong Kong Women’s Ice Hockey. Following the team’s competition in December for the Challenge Cup of Asia Division I, the Women’s National Team will be heading to Mexico City in March for the Women’s World Championship. Starting in October 2013, Hong Kong Women’s Ice Hockey League, which meets international standard, has also been organized for the female players development in Hong Kong.
